Anyone who is willing to see knows that overpopulation is the foundation of all our environmental troubles. Fail to address it, and nothing else we do will matter in the end. But there is an abundance of misinformation and disinformation floating around. Fortunately, this excellent (and short) video from Science does a very good job of laying down the facts.

You should expect more than ghosts, spirits and candy when Halloween arrives this year. On October 31, 2011, the world will welcome its seven billionth person, according to the United Nations Population Fund. Reaching such a large global population would have fascinated 19th century theorist Thomas Malthus. According to the Financial Times, Malthus argued — at a time when the world’s population was under 1 billion — the rate had to be lowered to prevent the famine and violence that would come with overpopulation.Human ingenuity and technology have played a big in defying Malthus, but there’s no doubt the population explosion has taken a toll on the resources. Sorry to see that you have fallen for this old tired argument about Texas. Your footprint is determined by the total impact of your consumption, how much farmland is needed to feed you, how much air and water is polluted manufacturing everything you consume, how many square feet of mines and clearcuts and gargage dumps are you responsible for, etc, etc. We all need to reduce our consumption but even more is having fewer kids, or to choose to have no kids at all.

  5. With the world’s population about to hit 7 billion, how did you decide how many children to have? According to the UN, the world’s population is due to hit 7 billion on 31 October. It took until 1804 for humanity to reach its first billion – and has taken only 12 years to add our latest billion. As of our people’s panel series, we’d like to hear from readers willing to write about how they came to a decision about the number of children they decided to have. Do you believe overpopulation is a problem, or, as columnist George Monbiot does, a myth? Did you take population numbers into consideration before your family? Perhaps you are childless by choice, or like many commenters in this thread, decided to stop after one or two children? Or do you have a large family, but are careful to be frugal, for environmental reasons? If you would like to please email Jessica Reed before Wednesday 26 October at 12pm (UK time), with a…
